Country Living in Oxford County: The Dream… and the Reality
There’s something about country living that pulls at people.
Maybe it’s the quiet.
Maybe it’s the space.
Or maybe it’s the idea of a slower, simpler life.
For me, it’s personal.
I grew up in the country—on a pig farm. And honestly, as a kid, I thought it was the best life in the world.
We didn’t know anything different… just freedom.
We biked down gravel roads (and learned quickly to turn your head when a car drove by so you didn’t eat dust).
We wandered to the neighbour’s creek trying to catch crayfish.
Winter meant snowstorms, homemade skating rinks, and tobogganing off the barn roof into giant snow drifts.
My mom had a huge garden—and while I definitely didn’t love weeding it, I now realize how special that was.
We canned food, stacked wood, and lived in a way that felt very connected to the land.
As kids, it felt magical.
As adults… we start to see the full picture.
The Dream Side of Country Living
When people picture moving to the country—or even to smaller villages around Oxford County—this is what they’re often imagining:
1. Space and Freedom
No close neighbours. No constant noise. Just room to breathe.
2. A Lifestyle for Families
Kids can explore, build, ride bikes, and just be kids in a way that’s harder to find in town.
3. Connection to Nature
You notice the seasons more. You slow down. You live a little more intentionally.
4. Room for Hobbies (and Toys!)
Whether it’s a workshop, gardening, animals, or even snowmobiling right from your property—there’s space to actually live your lifestyle.
5. A Sense of Independence
Wells, septic systems, wood heat… there’s something empowering about being a little more self-sufficient.
But Here’s What People Don’t Always Think About…
1. Maintenance Never Stops
That long, beautiful driveway?
You’re plowing it. Every snowfall. Sometimes more than once.
2. Heating Costs Can Be Higher
Wood, oil, propane… rural heating isn’t always simple—or cheap. And yes, that wood pile doesn’t stack itself.
3. Wells & Septic Systems
Even in some villages in Oxford County, you may not have municipal services.
That means:
- Testing your water
- Maintaining your well equipment
- Pumping your septic system
- Being mindful of what goes down your drains
It’s not difficult—but it is responsibility.
4. Distance from Amenities
Quick trip to the grocery store? Not always quick.
Schools, activities, and work commutes can take more planning.
5. Property Upkeep
More land = more work.
Think:
- Lawn care (and lots of it)
- Tree maintenance
- Outbuildings
- Driveways, fencing, and drainage
6. Weather Hits Different
Snowstorms feel bigger in the country.
Wind is stronger.
And if something goes wrong—you don’t always have immediate help nearby.
What About Small Villages?
This is something I always make sure my clients understand.
Even if you’re not “in the country,” many smaller communities in Oxford County still have:
- Septic systems
- Wells
- Limited municipal services
So while it feels like town living… it can come with country responsibilities.
So… Is Country Living Right for You?
The truth is—there’s no right or wrong answer.
Country living can be:
- peaceful
- rewarding
- grounding
But it also asks more of you.
Here’s a question I often ask clients:
Do you want the lifestyle… or do you just love the idea of it?
Because those are two very different things.
Final Thoughts
I loved growing up in the country.
And I’m so grateful my kids got to experience it too—even if just for a period of time.
There’s something about that lifestyle that stays with you—the space, the freedom, the memories.
But when it comes to buying a home—especially in rural areas or smaller villages—it’s important to go in with your eyes wide open.
That’s where Marianne and I come in.
We don’t just help you find the right home…
We help you understand the lifestyle that comes with it—so you can feel confident in your decision, not surprised by it.
If you’re thinking about making the move to the country—or even a smaller village—what’s pulling you toward it?
And just as important… what’s holding you back?
We’d love to have that conversation with you.
